Ford F-150 Engine Options Add Impressive EcoBoost Powertrain

The 2017 Ford F-150 is getting a new powertrain, including an exciting EcoBoost engine that’s been in the works for nearly two years. Ford engineers have been working hard to provide the best combination of efficiency and power, finally developing this innovative breakthrough that’s bound to satisfy any driver.

According to MSN, the new Ford F-150 engine options will include a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with EcoBoost technology. Although the power plant will still generate the same 365 horsepower as its predecessor, it will get an increase of torque to 450 lb-ft. The new EcoBoost has direct and port fuel injection, as well as an electronically actuated wastegate system.

“The Ford truck team lives to serve our hardworking truck customers,” said Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president of Product Development and chief technical officer. “The powertrain is the heart of every F-150, and together our all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 10-speed transmission will give our customers better power, efficiency and confidence.”

Paired with this new engine is a 10-speed automatic transmission, specially designed to handle the increase of torque. Interestingly, Ford collaborated with GM to co-develop this new transmission, which promises to optimize power and efficiency, especially when heavy loads are involved. We can’t wait to see the new F-150 powertrain in action.

2017 Ford F-150 Will Debut New 10-Speed Transmission

This fall, the 2017 Ford F-150 will make its debut. For buyers who choose the new 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, they’ll get a new 10-speed transmission, too. This all-new transmission will deliver more torque and better acceleration for the F-150.

Ford says the torque will increase to 450 lb-ft, a best-in-class number for a V6 engine. This is an increase of 30 lb-ft over the first-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine. In addition, the new transmission is the first volume-produced 10-speed transmission available from any automaker.

“The Ford truck team lives to serve our hardworking truck customers,” said Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president, Product Development, and chief technical officer, in a statement. “The powertrain is the heart of every F-150, and together our all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 10-speed transmission will give our customers better power, efficiency and confidence.”

To save weight in the new transmission, engineers used advanced materials and alloys in place of cast-iron components. In addition, an integrated torque converter/turbine clutch cuts down another 2 pounds and makes the transmission slightly smaller.

The new transmission uses advanced technology to help drivers while towing and real-time-adaptive shift-scheduling ensures the transmission chooses the right gear at the right time for an optimal driving experience.

Here at Mangold Ford, we can’t wait to experience both the new 3.5-liter EcoBoost and the new 10-speed automatic transmission. You’ll be able to find both right here this fall.

Ford F-150 vs Chevy Silverado

When it comes to American pickup trucks, the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado are longtime rivals. Beyond brand loyalty, it can be difficult to decide which is the better truck for you, so we’ve compared the two side by side.

Engine and Performance

The Ford F-150 is the clear winner when it comes to the engine and performance. The F-150’s EcoBoost V6 engine is more powerful than the Silverado’s engine in terms of horsepower and torque and it gets better gas mileage.

Interior and Technology

The F-150 also wins in the technology category, as it has more features and innovations than the Silverado. The Silverado has a larger and slightly quieter interior, giving it some points over the F-150, but the abundant amenities of the F-150 make it at least equally as comfortable as the Silverado.

Winning almost every category you can compare them in, the Ford F-150 is our pick for the superior truck, and it’s no surprise, since the Ford F-150 has been America’s favorite truck for decades and is the best-selling truck of all time. While the Silverado sells for slightly less, you get more bang for your buck with the abundant amenities and superior performance of the F-150.

2015 Ford F-150 Wins Altair Enlighten Award

The all-new 2015 Ford F-150 has just been honored with the Altair Enlighten Award. This award, given out by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), recognizes vehicles that use lightweight materials to minimize their weight.

Ford engineers were able to shed 700 pounds off the curb weight of the F-150 by using lightweight, military-grade aluminum in the body along with high-strength steel in the frame.

“We are excited to present Ford with the 2015 Altair Enlighten Award,” said Dave Mason, Vice President of Global Automotive at Altair, in a statement. “The judges recognized Ford’s best-in-class innovation with the company’s approach to weight reduction by incorporating advanced materials and design technologies for the F-150.”

While you might think a lighter truck would be less powerful or even less safe, the 2015 F-150 boasts best-in-class towing, payload, and EPA-estimated fuel efficiency. It has also earned a five-star overall crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for all cab configurations.
